A Nostalgic Getaway: Our Family Trip to Pengkalan Balak, Malacca

 By Mia❤

There's something special about packing your bags, piling into the car with your family, and heading out for a short escape from the usual routine. Our recent trip to Pengkalan Balak, Malacca, turned out to be just that, a refreshing, heartfelt journey filled with laughter, heritage, and unexpected discoveries.

We stayed at Kampong Pinang Sebatang Resort, a charming place that immediately transported us into the golden era of Malay cinema.

The resort drew inspiration from the legendary Tan Sri P. Ramlee's masterpieces, with its vintage decor, kampung-style wooden chalets, and echoes of his films in every corner.

Walking into our room felt like stepping onto an old black-and-white movie set complete with classic furniture, gramophones, and framed posters of "Bujang Lapok" and "Seniman Bujang Lapok." It was heartwarming to see my parents light up with nostalgia, recalling scenes and songs they grew up with.

Just a short walk from the resort, we found ourselves at Pengkalan Balak Beach, a peaceful coastal stretch perfect for evening strolls. The kids collected seashells while the adults sat by the shore, chatting and enjoying the ocean breeze. The sunset there was absolutely magical warm orange hues spread across the sky like a painting, reflecting gently on the waves.

One of the highlights of our trip was venturing out to the Melaka Premium Outlet (MPO). As someone who loves a good deal, I was thrilled. The place was packed with branded outlets offering impressive discounts.

My siblings and I wandered from one shop to another, each of us coming out with something we didn’t know we needed backpacks, shoes, even a few skincare items. It was a mix of retail therapy and bonding time, with plenty of photo stops along the way.

From there, we made our way to one of the most unique spots I’ve ever been to Coach Airways. Nestled in Freeport A’Famosa Outlet, this retired airplane-turned-café and boutique was a dream come true for both travel lovers and fashion enthusiasts.

Stepping inside the aircraft felt surreal the original cockpit remained, but the interior had been transformed into a luxury showroom and coffee corner.

I sipped an iced latte while seated in what used to be a first-class seat, gazing out through the tiny oval window. It was such an unusual experience, and definitely Instagram-worthy!

Throughout our stay, we indulged in local Malaccan delicacies 'masak lemak' at nearby restaurant, which is Sultan Salai. We took things slow, enjoying the rhythm of kampung life. The absence of constant notifications and traffic jams was a gift in itself.

This trip reminded me of the beauty of staying connected to our roots while exploring new things. Kampong Pinang Sebatang’s nostalgic charm, the modern buzz of MPO, and the creativity behind Coach Airways each place added a unique flavour to our family journey. More than just sightseeing, it was about being together, laughing, reminiscing, and making new memories to cherish.

Malacca, with its mix of heritage and modernity, gave us a perfect little escape and a reminder that sometimes, the best trips are the ones closest to home.
