EDC, EDT, EDP, Parfum, and Eau Fraîche: What's the Real Difference in Fragrances?
By Syamil
If you're a newbie in the perfume world, all that technical jargon like EDC, EDT, EDP, Parfum and even Eau Fraîche would make your head spin. Don't worry, I'm breaking it down to you in the most simplistic way possible so you clearly know what you're applying and why it matters.
These adjectives basically tell you how strong the smell is and how long it will last.
Oil concentration: 1% – 3%
Longevity: Up to 1 hour
Eau Fraîche is lighter than Eau de Cologne. It's mostly water with a hint of scent that you can barely detect. Think like a body mist—super hydrating, barely there, and perfect when you simply want to smell fresh and light.
Example: Versace Man Eau Fraîche
Good for: Hot sun days, gym bags, quick freshen-up
Super short-lived, needs to be reapplied often
EDC – Eau de Cologne
Oil content: 2% – 5%
Longevity: 1 to 2 hours
EDC is the most lightweight of the traditional perfume types. It doesn't linger but it smells clean. This is what you spray when you get out of a shower or when you simply need a rapid pick-me-up. It's very relaxed and perfect for hot weather.
Example: 4711 Original Eau de Cologne
Ideal for use after: Post-workout, short runs, hot summer days
Low sillage, short lasting
EDT – Eau de Toilette
Oil concentration: 5% – 15%
Longevity: 3 to 5 hours
EDT is the most popular type because it’s affordable, light, and works for daily wear. Most guys wear EDTs to class, work, or casual hangouts. It gives you a noticeable scent without being overpowering.
Example: Dior Sauvage EDT, Acqua di Gio Pour Homme
Great for: Daily use, class, casual dates
May need to reapply halfway through the day
EDP – Eau de Parfum
Oil concentration: 15% – 20%
Wear time: 6 to 10 hours
EDP is stronger, more intense, and longer wearing. Only a few spritzes and you have the scent on you all day long. It also smells deeper and more intense. I use EDP when I want to make a statement.
Example: JPG Ultra Male, Valentino Uomo Born In Roma
Ideal for: Night events, special occasions, cold weather
Sometimes too strong for hot weather or small spaces
Parfum (also Extrait de Parfum)
Oil concentration: 20% – 30%
Longevity: 10+ hours
The most concentrated, strong version. Longest-lasting and often the priciest. A small amount is enough. Ideal for those who want a long-lasting, signature fragrance that can last throughout the day until evening.
Sample: Roja Dove Parfum, Creed Millésime Impérial (Parfum strength)
Ideal for: Special occasions, weddings, or night-outs
Expensive and may be too heavy for newbies
